For when you find yourself trapped in a spiral of overthinking, making pro and con lists, and wanting to force an outcome? It's the "anti-strategy"– a counterintuitive response.

This episode isn't about abandoning responsibility or ignoring deadlines. Rather, it's an invitation to recognize when forcing clarity through sheer willpower has diminishing returns. Sometimes the most powerful action is doing nothing.

Speaker 1:

I'm Carla Reeves, and this is Differently. Whether you feel stuck in survival, navigating a change, or seeking more for your life, may this podcast be your weekly nudge to take a risk to build a life that is uniquely bold, authentic and in alignment with your deepest values. What if you worried less about the bumps in the road and instead got equipped for the journey? Get ready to rethink what's possible. Hey, there, it's Carla. Today I want to talk about something that I'm calling the anti-strategy, because sometimes the best strategy is having no strategy at all. As someone whose brain is in strategy mode, a lot strategy is actually my top CliftonStrengths.

Speaker 1:

If you're familiar with the CliftonStrengths, I've been learning lately that sometimes the harder we try to figure things out, the more tangled up we get. Maybe you've been here too. You know those moments when you're overthinking every possible scenario or mapping out all kinds of visions, but nothing seems to stick, making endless pro and con lists, asking everyone for their opinion or trying to force clarity through sheer willpower and you know what it's exhausting. And, more importantly, willpower and you know what it's exhausting and, more importantly, it doesn't really work. Do you remember those Chinese finger traps? They're like these bamboo tubes that catch your fingers, and while your brain wants to think that you need to pull your fingers out to get out of the little trap, the tighter it actually becomes, and the solution is actually to push your fingers in towards each other and that sets you free. It's completely counterintuitive, and so is this idea, but that's exactly what this anti-strategy approach is about. When everything in you wants to push harder, plan more, think deeper, what if, instead, you got out of your head, stepped away from your desk, closed your laptop to just be still or get yourself involved in something entirely different? I know you might be thinking, but, carla, I have so much to do and I have plans to make and decisions to make and deadlines and responsibilities. I hear you, and I'm not suggesting that we abandon all planning and strategy forever. What I am suggesting is that sometimes the best way forward is to stop forcing things, and if you find yourself in this spot today, you might just try this on. Here's what I want to leave you with today. If you're stuck in a cycle of overthinking and over-strategizing, try the anti-strategy approach, even if it's just for a day. Give yourself permission to not have all the answers right now. Let the waters settle. Trust that clarity will come. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is nothing at all, and sometimes the path forward becomes clear when we stop trying so hard to find it.
